Participation in lifeguard instructor training does not guarantee certification. To become certified, participants must successfully complete all skill requirements, and must score an 80% or better on each written test. Once you’re certified, your certificate will be emailed as a PDF by the American Red Cross within just one week of course completion. Classes begin promptly at the designated time for each session on the schedule. It is at the full discretion of the instructor to decide if a participant can make up missed time in the class.

This course trains instructor candidates to teach basic level lifeguarding, waterfront lifeguarding, waterpark lifeguarding and shallow water lifeguarding. This includes training in such areas as first aid, lifeguard management, CPR/AED for professional rescuers, administering emergency oxygen and blood borne pathogens. Blood borne pathogens training covers the prevention of disease transmission and basic water rescue courses. The instructor candidates will also become familiar with lifeguarding, a process that starts with a presentation that covers the realities of lifeguarding and that includes water safety presentations.
